California Introduces New Rodenticide Ban on SGAR’s

  • Language:

AB-1788 SGAR Ban

On September 29, 2020, the governor of California approved Assembly Bill # 1788. With this, the possession, use, or sale of certain pesticides that use one or more of the specified second-generation anticoagulants is prohibited by law. It is very important to note that this is not a ban on all rodenticides nor baits.

This new bill bans all of the following “Second-generation anticoagulant rodenticide” active ingredients. I included some examples of the product families that use them but know that the ban is not just limited to these products but to any that use the mentioned active ingredients. With some exclusions of course for government, educational and agricultural use.

  • Brodifacoum
    • Syngenta’s Talon
    • Bell Labs’ Final
  • Difethialone
    • LiphaTech Generation
    • LiphaTech Blue Max
    • LiphaTech First Strike
  • Bromadiolone
    • Bell Labs Contrac
    • LiphaTech Maki
  • Difenacoum
    • Not common on pest control product

What are the alternatives

Different pesticide alternatives are now out on the market. They might not be necessarily new rodenticides but conform to the new regulations, nonetheless. They include but might not be limited to First Generation Anticoagulants, Cholecalciferol and Bromethalin based pesticides. Here are some of the ones that I found that use those active ingredients and a bit more information about them:

  • First Generation Anticoagulants
    • Works by reducing blood ability to clot
      • Requires multiple feeding to reach mortality
    • Its antidote is Vitamin K1
    • Shows typically results after 4 to 6 days
    • Active Ingredients:
      • Diphacinone
        • Example products include:
          • JT Eaton Bait Block
          • Bell Labs Ditrac
          • Adios Combo Bait
      • Chlorophacinone
        • Example products include:
          • LiphaTech Rozol Tracking Powder
      • Warfarin
        • Example products include:
          • Kuput Rat & Mouse Bait
  • Cholecalciferol Based Products
    • Works as a calcium liberator
    • There is no antidote for Cholecalciferol
    • Normally shows results after 3 to 5 days
    • Less bait is normally required as target pest will stop feeding as part of the results
    • Example products include:
      • BASF Selontra® Rodent Bait
      • Bell Labs Terad3 Blox
  • Bromethalin Based Products
    • Works as a neurotoxin
    • There is no antidote for Bromethalin
    • Normally shows results after 2 to 3 days
    • Example products include:
      • LiphaTech TakeDown Soft Bait
      • Bell Labs Fastrac

Of course, like with other pest issues, it is very important to have an integrated pest management plan. This will minimize the amount of pesticide that is used to control the target infestation, as well as minimize the impact that this new restriction has on you as a consumer.
