How has COVID-19 affected the pest and termite control industry from a family-owned business perspective

COVID-19 for Pest Control Companies

Back in late 2019 no one expected that this pandemic was going to get so out of control. It started with hearing it on the news here and there, to having travel restrictions, to a semi-complete closure of the country. The pest and termite control industries were allowed to continue working as they are a public necessity. We help take care of your rodent issues, control cockroach infestations and exterminate other pests that can cause health issues. In the case of wood destroying organisms the damage that can occur is structural and can cause thousands of dollars in repairs if not addressed early on.

Even though we are a public necessity, it has slowed down quite a bit. There is not as many clients completing high cost repair services, only what is most required. Rodent control as well as other pest control and intrusive termite damage remediation is the most common services we offer now. Structural fumigations which is one of the best ways to control drywood termites has become harder to complete and thus the demand for it has lowered. This is because families do not have anywhere to go to, and due to the quarantine, it is not recommended that they go to a friends or family members home to stay for a couple days.

Nonetheless our industry is adapting and taking the necessary precautions in order to do our part of fighting this virus. We are required to use masks at all times when interacting with customer and other personnel, as well as avoiding any direct contact with clients. It is preferable when possible to avoid having the customer at the home during the inspection to follow the social distancing protocol. We are as well recommending our customers to user contactless payment methods like over-the-phone or internet-based systems or via contactless cards or mobile phone cards (Apple Pay, Google Pay, etc.) to avoid any cross-contamination by using material credit cards.

I believe that we are on the second half of this pandemic scenario. And thankfully we are starting to adapt to the changes, so it is becoming easier and easier to survive. Do not get me wrong, I know it has not been the best, and it is long from being over – but after thinking about it, I know that we will surpass this. It is not as bad as it could had been due to the measures taken by our community and government. Our community and our country will become stronger and better after all has passed. Here at GC Termite Control we are proud to continue assisting the community and will do so until we are no longer able to.
