  • Language:

Many times that I go out to inspect properties for Wood Destroying Organism I get the question “What can I do to prevent termites to get into my house?” Every time I answer that throughout the years I have noted that termites can get into any property they desired, there are ways to protect your protect your property but there is not a 100% bullet proof solution. Some people think that by fumigating your property that it will termite safe but that is not the case. Fumigations are performed by wrapping the structure and releasing a gas that will act as the exterminator. Once the wrap has been removed, the gas will be release into the atmosphere being that is lighter that outside air. Once the gas is gone and is safe for you to go back into your property then it’s safe for the termites to go back as well. It will be a 100% kill but you do have the extra risk, here are some of the things you can do to help you keep termites away from your structure:

  1. The most important step to protect your property is by having a licensed inspector check your property every 12 – 24 months. This will let you know if there is any infestation at your property and if there is what is the best way to exterminate. When an infestation is found early on it would be more cost effective to eradicate that if you leave it there creating more damage that would be needed to repair at a later time.
  2. There are also preventive treatments that can be sprayed into your property. There are some solutions sold at stores like Home Depot or Lowes. I would recommend having it done by a licensed termite control company, we do not use the same products as the ones the general public has access to and our products will provide you with a better coverage.
  3. Be sure as well to paint your exposed wood and / or eaves regularly. Termites and other wood-destroying organism love to infest areas where there is moderate moisture. By having all of your exposed wood properly sealed, the moisture level will be minimum and it will be harder for termites to infest your structure.
  4. Make sure that your roofing / rain gutters are properly installed if not this can cause a problematic moisture condition. Dampwood Termites love areas where there is a constant flow of moisture. An example of this is when you have a large water leak in your ceiling or also in many cases where a water pipe has broke.

The most important thing to remember is that by maintaining regularly your property regularly you will help keep termites and other pests outside of it. There might not exist a bullet proof way of protecting your structure but you will cut costs by just doing what needs to be done.
